I Quit

Quitting University

Story time.

Last October I embarked on the first year of a Law degree at University College London. And boy did I hate it. The city was beautiful, my friends amazing and my accommodation surprisingly clean. It was all absolutely perfect in fact bar one tiny little detail. I hated my course. I hated it with the vehement passion that vegans hate dairy farming and everyone hates Trump. So after giving myself a full year to try to trick my mind into enjoying the dull and tedious subject that is the law, I dropped out.

Giving up on something is tough, a lot tougher than you think it's going to be. In many cases in fact it seems a lot easier to just carry on. Less mess and less stress.

Sometimes we feel like we're too far into something to give up now even if that thing makes us completely miserable. Obviously if there is light at the end of the tunnel then plough on. If you know that you need this degree for your dream job then push on with the determination of an athlete training for the Olympics.

There's a difference between hard work and being miserable though. Hard work is just that: hard work. It's arduous and challenging but also rewarding and gets you to where you want to be. Working at something you hate and see no prospects in is different. You're not obliged to stay on a single path because that's all you've done so far. You are allowed to change your mind. You are allowed to follow new interests and dreams. Don't stop yourself from doing what will make you happy simply because you've never done it before.
