5 Steps To Take NOW to Get Your Dream Job

1 // Learn from others

Whatever it is you want to be, chances are you're not the first. Sound depressing? It's actually really exciting, because 1) that means it's possible and 2) you've got a roadmap. Want to be beauty editor at a fashion magazine? Look to Alex Steinherr, Lisa Niven, Natalie Lukaitis. Find out who's top of their game in the industry you want to work in and make it a priority to find out all you can about them. Linked-In is a god send. Find out exactly what courses they did, internships they took and jobs they worked to get to their current position. Obviously, this needn't be a rigid guide. You might decide to take a number of different routes to get where you want to go, but it does provide a general indication of what you're next step should be.

2 // Little steps make a big difference

Make it a priority to do something towards your goal every. single. day. This may sound daunting but I promise it doesn't have to be. Pick something small each day that will motivate and further you towards your goals. You might listen to a podcast, read an article, research internships, write one paragraph, brainstorm one idea, make one phone call. It can be anything. Doing something small each day keeps your eye on the prize. It's easy to get bogged down in other commitments and forget about your long term goals. Implementing a one thing every day rule integrates your career goal into your everyday life.

3 // Make an game plan

Work out how you are going to get from A to B. This doesn't have to be in any detail. Just write down the general steps you're going to have to take e.g. getting a certain degree, internships, entry-level job. This gives you a bit of confidence that you know what you're doing next and may also provide you with a bit more of a realistic time scale to reach your goals.

4 // Get Social

Follow people in the industry you want to work in. We're so lucky to be living in an age of social media, where it's easy to interact with people who might otherwise be out of our rech.. Find them on Twitter, Instagram, Snapchat, Bloglovin', anywhere and everywhere. This way you can easily keep up to date with what they're up to, as well as any big events in the industry. Reach out to people who inspire you or whose work you enjoy.

5 // Network

As great as social media is, there's nothing quite like a face-to-face meeting. Make an effort to seek out events in the area that you want to work in. For example, many magazines hold events for people looking to work in the fashion industry, and law firms do informative evenings for prospective employees. Make an effort to go to these and when you're there speak with as many people as possible. Talk to the people holding the event and ask them questions about their job. Talk to the people in the same position as you. They may be both your peers and your competition.
